Okra Stew- Here is An Arabic Recipe

Summer is here. So, our today’s lunch is inspired by Arabic-style okra stew with rice. Extremely Yummy and Delightful!!

The delectable okra stew is a regular lunch staple at many homes in UAE. This is a traditional Arabic dish which is also called bamieh or bamia. It is a great combination of okra, lamb meat and healthy Arabic spices. Great aroma and delicious taste make it almost everyone’s favorite. If you never taste okra stew, this simple recipe is a great place to start, and if you already love to eat okra stew, then this recipe is good to add to your variation. Ingredients:

  • Fresh Okra —– 2 lbs
  • Lamb — 1 -1 1⁄2 lb (stew meat size)
  • Tomato sauce — 2 cups
  • Onion — 1 large, chopped
  • Garlic— 6 cloves, chopped
  • Olive Oil/vegetable oil — 1⁄4 cup
  • Water — 2 cups
  • Salt — 2 teaspoons
  • Black pepper — 1 teaspoon
  • Allspice — 1⁄2 teaspoon
  • Fresh cilantro — 1⁄2 cup, chopped (optional) or 1 teaspoon coriander (optional)

Servings: 6-8

Preparation Time: 1 Hour

Directions:

  1. Wash okra, remove stems, and dry.
  2. Fry okra in olive oil until light browned and remove the stock for later use.
  3. Sauté chopped onions and diced garlic in olive oil and stir well. Then, add lamb meat, salt, and spices and stir until the meat is lightly browned.
  4. Add water and stir well, bring to a boil and then cover the pan and let it cook on low heat until meat is tender.
  5. Add browned okra, tomato sauce, and cilantro or coriander.
  6. Mix well, cover and let it simmer until okra is tender, for almost 10 minutes.
  7. Delicious okra stew is ready, serve it on a serving platter with rice.
