When they consume fish and shellfish containing a high amount of mercury, they can experience brain damage or certain disabilities. All fish contain some amount of mercury. For example, shark, tilefish, swordfish and king mackerel are high in mercury which can spoil the nervous system of a fetus or a young child. That’s why; seafood is dangerous for pregnant women. So, both expected mothers and adults should take some precautions when they eat seafood. They can eat small fish with low mercury levels, such as tilapia, salmon, shrimp, cod, and canned tuna.

Furthermore, there are some other contaminants found in fish, like dioxins and PCBs which can trigger some types of cancers and reproductive problems, according to a study. Therefore, you should limit the intake of seafood in your routine diet.

Yes, it is true that some kinds of seafood can raise the uric acid level in your body as they are rich in Purines. Purines are a toxin that is usually found in various foods. When you consume high-purine foods in a large quantity, they build up the uric acid crystals that can cause gout and some other diseases. Therefore, it is advised that you should not eat certain seafood including mackerel, sardines, anchovies, herring, and scallops on a regular basis. However, you can eat fish and other low-purine seafood as they are health-giving and may not lead to the risk of gout.

Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Maa’idah, “Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water-game and its use for food- for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel.” It means that all kinds of seafood are permitted (Halal) to eat for Muslims, whether it is animal or plant. It does not matter whether they are alive or dead.

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah Almighty says: “Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you.” So, there are few exceptions in this case. For example, crocodiles and frogs are forbidden (Haram) to eat by Muslims. Flake, Crayfish, Marlin, Lobster, Oyster, Octopus, Shark, Snake Mackerels, Swordfish, and Squid, etc. are also Haram in Islam because they have poisonous compounds that are harmful to human beings. However, you can eat Anchovies, Herring, Mackerel (except for snake mackerel), Prawns, Salmon, Sardines, Shrimp, Tuna, Whitefish and redfish as they are safe and Halal in our religion.
