Fattoush Recipe- A Delicious Middle Eastern Salad

Have you ever eaten fattoush? Fattoush is one of the most popular Middle Eastern salads and a standard dish on the Mezza (small dishes) table. This traditional Arabic salad is simply made with finely chopped vegetables and herbs, toasted pita bread and a scrumptious lemony garlic dressing. Sumac powder is a key ingredient of Fattoush. This deep red spice is sprinkled over the salad, seasoned with Arabic bread before toasting, and used in the dressing. Traditionally, this yummy salad is served alone or as a side dish with grilled fish, chicken or red meat. It is extremely colorful, crunchy, refreshing, flavorful and nutritive.

Here, I’m going to share a simple Fattoush recipe that is full of nutritional value and Arabic deliciousness. If you’ve never made an Arabic dish, this is a delectable and healthy option to start. Have a look at this!

Ingredients

  • Pita bread —- 2 small (4 inches)

  • English cucumber —- 1 large, finely diced
  • Halved grape tomatoes —- 3 cups
  • Red onion —- 1/2
  • Italian Parsley —- ¾ cup, chopped
  • Fresh mint —- ¾ cup, chopped
  • Garlic —– 1 clove, crushed
  • Extra-virgin olive oil —- 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh lemon juice —- 1 tablespoon
  • Pomegranate molasses —- 1 tablespoon
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper —- to taste
  • Ground sumac —- to taste
  • Crumbled sheep-milk feta cheese —- to taste
  • Vegetable oil —- 1 tablespoon

Servings: 4

Preparation Time: 30 Minutes

Directions:

  1. Cut the pita bread into four pieces and split them in half with a scissor. Brush each piece with vegetable oil, drizzle the sumac powder and fry them in a large skillet over medium-high heat or toast them in the oven to 375°F for 5-10 minutes or until they are golden brown. Keep aside.
  2. Chop all the vegetables and herbs and combine them in a large bowl.
  3. Add olive oil, salt, black pepper, sumac, lemon juice, garlic and pomegranate molasses,and mix them properly.
  4. Gently crush the toasted bread with your hands and add it to the salad. Mix again properly and adjust seasoning to taste.
  5. Serve the delicious fattoush salad on its own or as a side dish with grilled chicken, fish or meat. Enjoy this Delectable salad!!

  1. Thanks for sharing the Fattoush recipe. In the pictures it looks like the salad has romaine or some other type of lettuce, bell peppers and edamame. The recipe doesn’t have these ingredients.
