This modern comfort food has become a common food staple in America. A study reveals that Americans approximately consume 50 billion burgers each year. Unfortunately, not all burgers, even hamburgers, turkey or veggie burgers, are prepared with similar method. Burger bun, toppings, portion size and cooking method, can mean the difference between a relatively wholesome diet and an unhealthy lunch.

Whenever you eat your favorite burger, the first question that comes to your mind is;

Hamburger is one of the most selling burger in the US and across the world. It is typically a sandwich, prepared from more cooked patties of ground beef placed inside a bun or sliced bread roll. They are usually served with cheese, bacon, pickle, tomato, lettuce, and condiments (ketchup, chilies, mustard, relish and mayonnaise).

One serving of a hamburger contains 11 grams of saturated fat, 332 calories and 67 milligrams of sodium which is not a powerful nutritional package.

So why is ground beef particularly unhealthy? The reason is that ground meat is not the meat of a single cow, but it includes the meat of different animals to get the right mash-up of fat and lean meat. Usually, a single burger of ground beef may contain meat from 12 to 20 different animals. Additionally, ground beef contains some deadly bacteria such as E.coli (Escherichia coli), Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus and Campylobacter jejuni. They all bacteria can cause certain serious diseases. For example, E.coli can lead to abdominal cramping, kidney failure, and diarrhea while Salmonella can develop some health risks like vomiting, fever, nausea and diarrhea. So, you should avoid eating your favorite hamburgers on a daily basis.

So, the studies are pretty unappetizing, but it does not mean that you can’t excite your taste buds for a burger which is good for you. You can add healthy red meat (turkey meat) instead of ground meat in your hamburger. Red meat is an excellent source of protein which is essential for your muscle and organ health. It also contains numerous other nutrients such as Vitamin A and B12, potassium, riboflavin and zinc. Therefore, you should use the right amount of red meat in your hamburger which can be great for your overall health.
